A s a training consultant who adores and specialises in workshop design, it recently occurred to me that many
of the products I have created over
the years have in fact been rewrites,
as opposed to brand new products.
Without realising it, I have become quite
good at being able to diagnose designrelated issues and remedy them.
How do humans like to learn within
live, real time? For me the answers lie
within some fundamental aspects of
brain science, most, if not all of which the
Instructional Designer has absolutely no
control over. For example:
• We stop paying attention to the same
stimuli pretty quickly;
• We get bored really quickly (while
related to attention loss, boredom
needs to be dealt with separately);
• At any one time our minds work best
when given a limited number of things
to think about;
• We prefer patterns and ro
