Assign network addresses

TASK

You are required to answer all the following questions.

Question 1:

Consider the topology shown in Figure 1, where the three subnets with hosts are denoted as Networks A, B, and C, and the subnets without hosts as Networks D, E, and F.

1 Assign network addresses to each of these six subnets, with the following constraints:

All addresses must be allocated from 214.97.254/23;

Subnet A should have enough addresses to support 250 interfaces;

Subnet B should have enough addresses to support 120 interfaces;

Subnet C should have enough addresses to support 120 interfaces; and

Subnets D, E and F should each be able to support two interfaces.

For each subnet, the assignment should take the form a.b.c.d/x or a.b.c.d/x – e.f.g.h/y.

2 Using your answers to part 1.1, provide the forwarding tables (using longest prefix matching) for each of the three routers.

Question 2:

Suppose there are three routers between a source host and a destination host. Ignoring fragmentation, an IP datagram sent from the source host to the destination host will travel over how many interfaces? How many forwarding tables will be indexed to move the datagram from the source to the destination?

Question 3:

Compare Link state and Distance vector routing protocols at the network layer. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the protocols. Your answer must also list examples of Link state and Distance vector routing protocols.

Question 4:

A 140-byte message is sent through a private internet using the TCP/IP protocol suite (IPv4). If the protocol adds a 12-byte header at each layer (assume headers are added only at layers 5, 4, 3, and 2), what is the efficiency of the system (the ratio of the number of useful bytes to the number of total bytes)?

Question 5:

We know that an application may choose UDP for a transport protocol because UDP offers finer application control (than TCP) of what data is sent in a segment and when.

5.1 Why does an application have more control over what data is sent in a segment?

5.2 Why does an application have more control on when the segment is sent?

RATIONALE

This assessment task will assess the following learning outcome/s:

be able to define and explain various internet terminologies.

be able to describe and analyse the role and importance of internet technologies in the modern world.

be able to describe and evaluate emerging internet technologies such as Internet of Everything (IoE) and web applications.

be able to explain how different application layer services such as client-server and Peer-to-Peer Paradigms work in the internet.
