COM 400 Term Paper Assignment
You will be expected to write an original research paper for this class on an appropriate and approved theory covered in lectures. SUBMITTING A PAPER THAT YOU SUBMITTED FOR
ANOTHER CLASS IS ACADEMIC DISHONESTY. Once a theory has been chosen, it cannot
be changed. Your paper must follow the following format (See APA 6th edition style):
- Title page
- Abstract, keywords follow Abstract (see APA 6th edition manual)
- An introductory paragraph and the following: (your paper MUST do the following: Enumerate 1-5 and address each of the 5 items or the paper will not be accepted):
(1) Provide a thesis statement about why or why not the theory chosen is a “good” theory;
(2) identify and describe the theory as WVI or WVII, as appropriate and justify;
(3) identify and describe the central tenets of the theory;
(4) identify and describe the functions of a “good” theory and whether the theory you’ve chosen
meets those functions;
(5) identify and describe the evaluative criteria of “good” theory and whether your theory meets
those criteria.

- References (cited per APA 6th edition).
Papers are to follow a scholarly format and arguments and claims must be supported with research
from scholarly journals and books. You must follow APA 6th edition style, enumerate your paper and answer each of the 5 questions (support your answer with research) satisfactorily to meet the minimum requirements of the assignment.

Acceptable journals/books include: Communication Monographs, Human Communication Research, Communication Yearbook, Journal of Communication, Communication Quarterly, Western Journal of Communication, Communication Theory, Southern Journal of Communication, Communication Studies, Sex Roles, Journal of Marriage and Family, Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and Personal Relationships. Use of magazines or non-academic sources is not acceptable. You may use books/book chapters if the books are scholarly books. If you have found a source that you’d like to use, please feel free to pass it by me first if it does not appear on the list above.
Plagiarism (i.e., borrowing others’ ideas or words without proper citation, submitting another’s
work as your own, submitting a paper completed for another class, etc.) will not be tolerated and engagement in such an act is considered academic misconduct and will be dealt with appropriately.
It is the student’s responsibility to make sure the paper is written clearly and cogently. The
instructor will stop grading a paper when the third spelling error or incoherent sentence is read. Students who need extra assistance with their writing style should contact the Writing Center at 702-895-3908 for more information regarding writing workshops and tutoring.
Your paper should be 8-10 pages in length, not including title page, abstract, and references. You must use at least 10 scholarly sources in addition to the textbooks.
