(For example, in fiction, kindness might be a topic — what does the book say about kindness? Thats the theme!) Demonstrate solid understanding of the subject and theme/main idea of the book. Think Words of the Wiser. What do the characters learn? Thats the theme! Three Power Lines: Choose three power lines — quote three powerful lines or passages that exemplify the theme of the book. Fully explain how these three quotes/passages support or develop the theme/main idea. For each, provide the context for the power line (meaning explain briefly what is happening in the book at the time), give the power line, and then relate the power line back to the theme. Always follow this formula: Context: Introduce power line. Quote: Give line. Commentary: Explain line and relate it back to theme. Fiction: Look for other signposts, including Contrasts & Contradictions, Aha Moment, Tough Questions, Again & Again, and Memory Moment — and relate them back to the theme. Nonfiction: Look for signposts, including Contrasts & Contradictions, Absolute or Extreme Language, Numbers & Stats, Quoted Words, and Word Gaps. Connections: Draw connections between the book and Hintz and Tribunellas text. Identify in the book any ideas or concepts from the Hintz and Tribunella reading. Utilize the academic language of literary study presented in Hintz and Tribunella. Refer to specific quotes/passages and page numbers in Hintz and Tribunella. Literary Elements: Make critical observations about representation of characters; imagery; point of view; conflict; allusions; motifs; figurative language; word choice; other literary devices. If reading picture books or graphic novels, make critical observations about the illustrations, white space, gutters, representation of characters, and so on. Reaction & Response: Utilize reader response theory to discuss how and why the book does or does not resonate with you. Alternatively, apply any critical lens or literary theory to the book. Explain how the lens/theory informs your reading of the book. If youre not working in GoogleDocs, be sure to save your AA in pdf format to submit on D2L. No other format will be accepted, read, and evaluated.
