What follows is a description of what Im looking for in your essays. Your essays should be between 3 and 4 pages in length. You should write in Times New Romans font, at 11.5 size, and 1.5 line spacing between lines. Refrain from writing in the first person. Follow either APA or Chicago style guidelines for formatting, but on the whole, you can just use parenthetical citation for all main text references. When finished, email a pdf version of your essay to me by the essay deadline. This essay is essentially a comparative essay in which you are taking two or more readings from the Enlightenment (but Im open to you picking readings from the premodern period), and comparing the ideas contained within them. I will be grading on a few specific things: 1) Comprehension of the material 2) Engagement with the material- quoting the material to sufficiently support your argument, but not so much that you are no longer making the argument; quoting to much removes your voice, and leaves only the readings 3) Ability to argue and persuade- Argue for your view of how these two or more readings do and should be compared 4) Organization and clarity- do you have a thesis statement, and does it accurately explain what your argument is, and then does your essays organization clearly unpack your thesis 5) Grammer and spelling
