Your first paragraph gives your reason for writing. Kaplan has always prided itself on providing its students with a quality education. For this reason, we would like to introduce you to an exciting new change in the Accounting course. Beginning this trimester, letter writing will become an integral part of the Company Accounting module, enabling students to develop practical communication skills that will benefit them in the workforce.

Reasons for the change. As you may be aware, the change was first suggested last year. At this time, the Accounting Association put forward concerns that new graduates with sound technical knowledge were experiencing difficulty when they communicated with clients. After careful consideration of the issue, the Education Board decided that it would benefit both students and the industry if this skill was incorporated into accredited courses. It made a recommendation that tertiary institutions integrate Communication into their accounting subjects, and advised that it is considering making it a compulsory component of these courses by 2022.

Kaplan has always been an innovative educator, and we believe we are leading the way in providing communication studies within the Accounting degree. The primary communication task you will cover in this class is letter writing, a skill which is highly valued by employers. By improving it at an undergraduate level, you will gain a competitive edge over other jobseekers in today’s crowded market.

For one thing, it is possible you have not written a business letter before and so are unaware of the style and layout. For another, you may not have the word processing skills required to produce a professional document. For these reasons, we are providing a number of support measures to guide you through any difficulties you may experience. The first and most important of these will be a mini-tutorial on letter writing during your week five lecture. In addition to this, we are offering free one-to-one feedback on your draft through your Academic Success Centre Advisor.
A negative impact is played down & a solution given. While these letter writing skills are essential, providing you with in-class training will necessitate a slight decrease in the lecture time available to cover the week’s Accounting material. We are aware this may cause comprehension difficulties for some of you in the lead up to the exam. In order to minimise the impact, we will prioritise review of the condensed work in week 12. We also suggest that you prepare the week five material by reviewing the lecture slides before you come to class as this will enable your lecturer to cover the day’s requirements more quickly. With these measures, we anticipate that you will gain more benefit from the revised lecture as it will allow you to apply your accounting knowledge to a practical situation in which you need to advise a client.
A summary of the letter. We would like to highlight that it is likely all schools will need to include a communication component in their accounting assignments in the near future. By preparing for this now, Kaplan is ensuring you have a competitive advantage over your colleagues. We are confident that your preparation for the lecture tutorial combined with an Academic Success Centre appointment will enable you to excel in this valuable new skill.
