Hate/ Bias Crimes Assignment.
The following is the assignment outline:
1) OPENING: a) Describe the scope of the hate crime problem.
b) Define and differentiate between hate crimes and hate incidents.
c) Explain hate crime and incident source theories.
2) BODY: Choose a hate/ bias incident from the list below, or find one on your own, and complete the following:
a) Provide the who/ what/ where/ when/ why
b) Identify the cause, or potential cause, for the indcient (i.e. sexual orientation, race, etc.)
c) Identify the offender(s); indicate if associated to a particular gang or hate group.
d) Discuss the outcome of the case (charges/sentencing, or if it is a recent case, state “awaiting trial”)
3) SUMMARY:
State if you were aware of the incident prior to conducting research on this topic. Discuss your feelings on the incident as a whole. In your opinion, does the case outcome justify the crime? Explain.
