OVERALL GUIDELINES
• Read through my guiding power point and use the activity template provided to conduct a detailed stakeholder
analysis (from a SHRM and ROWE perspective) to identify the key issues
• – this is the basis for your critical analysis. Report and discuss this data in section 1. – read the questions
thoroughly so you understand the perspective to take in each section.
• When you complete the PEST analysis do it from a SHRM and ROWE perspective – focus on the issues and
implications for Best Buy in this case study.
• Political could focus on government initiatives to promote more flexible workplaces and increasing diversity,
increasing participation etc and how the ROWE scheme might contribute to this by making jobs available to more
women/parents/older people/disabled etc.
• Economic could examine the costs associated with implementing the scheme including admin, training,
equipment and safety audits of home offices etc. plus the economic benefits of increasing engagement and
productivity etc.
• Socio-cultural could address the aspects of workers needing to feel they are part of a team and for managers to
be present with staff to provide adequate feedback etc – the sense of isolation felt by remote workers etc
• Technology could address the ways the use of technology can assist to overcome the issues associated with
implementing a ROWE scheme
• Environmental can examine the benefits having staff working remotely or at home – less pollution from staff
travelling to and from work, reduced power and paper consumption etc
• Legislative could examine the laws relating to employment conditions and workplace health and safety that
would inform the implementation of a ROWE scheme
OVERALL GUIDELINES
• Keep focussed on the issues surrounding the implementation of the ROWE
scheme from a SHRM perspective – this will follow through to the section on the
staffing plan – you will have identified the characteristics that a successful ROWE
worker will need and the stresses they may face – you can use this information to
inform the recruitment, induction and training strategies Best Buy should use.
• When it comes to the section on performance management and strategic
rewards you will need to research widely to develop your strategies and support
them with authoritative references. Remember – for the rewards to be strategic,
they need to support the objectives of the ROWE implementation and can
address the broader personal needs of the worker as long as they support their
success in the role.
• In each section discuss the HRM theory associated with the topic to establish
your understanding – then use your analysis to examine how Best Buy addressed
the issues or how they might have…
OVERALL GUIDELINES
Make sure they are recent and check the number of times the articles have been cited in other research to get a sense of their
relevance.
Any assertions you make must be supported by multiple scholarly sources. Single sources will not be adequate unless the
author is the seminal researcher in the field and even then you might look for contrary views to enhance your analysis.
Final word
This task is an analysis of the implementation of the ROWE scheme in Best Buy at the time. It is NOT about anything that Best
Buy did years later.
You are to confine your analysis to the facts presented in the case study ONLY.
Your analysis of the case study should be from the perspective of current best practice for SHRM and be grounded in the theory
from your textbook.
DO NOT analyse what Best Buy did later.
Use ALL of the tables in the template and answer ALL sections of the Task.
