The proposal must include the following:
• Paper topic: 200 word outline of the international security issue that you wish to write about. The topic should be analytically oriented, evaluating the similarities and differences between the three subjects (see Week 10 Research Paper for more information).
o Identify which contemporary international security issue you are covering.
o Initial thoughts on how the three theorists might assess this issue.
o An initial thesis on the compare and contrast task.
o Potential arguments.
o Conclusions you hope to draw.
• Annotated Bibliography: The Annotated Bibliography should include a minimum of 10 resources you intend to use in your paper. Note that you will be submitting a refined bibliography in week 5 as you continue working on your research paper. The academic works used cannot be internet sites but must be published books or journal articles. Include the correct and complete citation in Chicago style and a brief description of each of the resources (including a statement about the reliability of the source).
The Research Paper:
•Provides each student with the opportunity to focus on a contemporary international security issue, conduct research and analysis of the issue, and prepare a paper that advances the literature on that issue. Consequently, it enables students to concentrate on topics of significant value and interest to them as long as the topics are relevant to any of the individual weeks found in this seminar.
Note: This research paper is a comparison and contrast research essay, in which you focus on the ways in which certain things or ideas—usually two, in this case, three of them—are similar to and/or different from one another. This paper encourages you to make connections between texts or ideas, engage in critical thinking, and go beyond mere description or summary to generate interesting analysis: when you reflect on similarities and differences, you gain a deeper understanding of the items you are comparing, their relationship to each other, and what is most important about them.
It should not be an examination of tactics, technology, force structure, or future force planning concepts. Also, it should not be a library search and recitation of published material, nor should it contain proposals or recommendations regarding numbers and types of weapons platforms, modifications to said platforms, weapons, sensors, or force structure.
The Research Paper requires independent thought and competent writing because the final product should be suitable for publication in a professional journal. The range and depth of research should be adequate to support the student’s approach and justify sufficiently the conclusions and recommendations or lessons learned.
The Research Paper must have the following:
•A thesis: A definitive position that the paper will aim to defend, support, or justify.
•Sufficient research to analyze the thesis properly.
•Logical conclusions drawn from the material presented within the paper.
•Recommendations or lessons learned, as appropriate, demonstrating the paper’s relevance to the modern operational commander.
•At least 10 academic works that cannot be internet sites but must be published books or journal articles.
Requirements
•Length: 3,750 to 5,000 words (15-20 pages). Entities such as an abstract, table of contents, endnotes, bibliography, charts, maps, tables, figures, etc., do not count against the amount of space available for text.
•Bibliography
•Utilize Chicago-Style citations. You must cite the sources to which your examination refers.
•Margins: one-inch top, bottom, left and right
•Justification: Left except when centering is necessary
•Double-space all text
•Times New Roman 12 point font
Refer to the Syllabus for point value of this assignment.
