Compare and contrast the protagonists Piri (Down These Mean Streets) and Teresa (The Mixquiahuala Letters). Compose an essay that examines one to three aspects of each protagonist. How you approach this analysis may vary. Some suggestions: You could organize your analysis focusing on emotional or attitudinal characteristics, with a focus on how the text highlights these qualities: How do we know the characters? Alternatively, you could center your analysis on character development and transformation over the course of the text: How do the protagonists change? Another approach would be to ground your analysis in events or actions in the text that speak to or illuminate the moral and ethical characteristics of and/or challenges to the protagonists: How do the actions of the protagonists reveal to us who they really are (or what their challenges are)? Or, you could focus your analysis on a single thematic struggle or conundrum of the character: What is this struggle (and how do we as readers know this), and how do the characters respond to this struggle? Students should use the supplementary reading for their chosen text to help complete their analyses. Essay should demonstrate complete familiarity with the text by citing and/or quoting from the text(s) to help sustain a convincing and thoughtful analysis. Paper is due March 11th @ 11:59pm
