SUBJECT: Information Paper Format

1. Purpose: To provide guidance on the preparation and use of an information paper.

2. Facts:

a. An information paper provides facts in a clear, concise, and logical format. Writers may alter the format to meet a specific need.1

b. The paper must include the subject and the purpose. Paragraphs will contain only the essential facts concerning the subject. Papers will be self-explanatory and will not refer to enclosures except for tabular data, charts, or photographs. For CGSOC purposes, use the office symbol (above) for the Department of Distance Education (DDE).2

c. Information papers should not exceed one typed page and will not exceed two pages. The papers do not require an actual signature, but must include the action officer’s (AO) name and telephone number (your name and number) in the lower right corner. The paper will also include an approval line below the AO name and number.3

d. Students should avoid using acronyms and abbreviations in writing, except for those that are familiar outside of the Army (e.g., DOD, ARSTAF, etc.). If in doubt, write it out, introduce, and then use to avoid reader confusion.

e. Additionally, students should not use classified information when it does not contribute to understanding the issue. For this academic assignment, do not use any classified information.

g. The assignment allows students to develop a better understanding of the topic (joint light tactical vehicle) and practice in synthesizing voluminous factual information. It is important to be clear, concise, relevant, and accurate.

h. Ordinarily, students would not cite sources in an information paper. However, since this is an academic setting, students must cite the sources for this assignment as in a standard essay. Remember that complete academic documentation (and good staff officer work) requires both specific citation (endnote or footnote) by page, paragraph or slide number AND the bibliography general information. Use Turabian (Chicago Style) format; refer to ST 22-2 for examples and additional guidance about academic writing.
