HIST 201: U.S. History, 1865-Present
Topic: What are the Measures taken to manage Disastrous Earthquake in Japan?
Part 1 Disaster Description: The first part of the assignment is to summarize the disaster. The summary ought to include the nature of this disaster (whether it was a political, military, police, or natural disaster), what happened, and what were the immediate consequences within your selected city. (200-250 words, 1 page)
Part 2 Disaster Analysis: The second part of the assignment is to select one of the following themes: infrastructure, education, emergency services, or physical reconstruction1. Upon selecting your theme, describe how your selected city addressed this issue, and how did this response complement state/federal government measures. Was this response unanimous or did the government experience internal disputes? Was their response effective, why or why not? What were the major difficulties in implementing this solution? How did the global community view the government’s response? Lastly, what alternative solutions do you suggest? (500-650 words, 2-2.5 pages)
Part 3 Conclusion: Concluding paragraphs go well beyond summing up the paper’s main points. Instead, you ought to explain whether the issue described in part 2 is ongoing as well as describe the long-term implications of this issue. (200-250 words, 1 page)
I encourage you to organize your paper by using subsection titles.
Examples of Acceptable Projects: Unfortunately, there are several crises to choose from. The following are some examples that you may select. However, I encourage you to identify and select a disaster/urban center that you would like to learn more about.
Research: you must use at least two academic sources and three journalist sources. The two academic sources must come from academic journals or monographs. The three journalist sources must come from accredited news agencies. I encourage you to select articles from at least two different companies (e.g. 2 articles from The BBC, and 1 article from Al-Jazeera as opposed to 3 articles from The Washington Post).
Note: Use the resources that are most relevant to your selected topic.
Citations: For this assignment, you must cite your work. This does not mean slapping on a “Work’s Cited” page at the end of your assignment. You must tell the reader exactly where you obtained your information. I recommend that you use MLA, but you may use APA or Chicago as long as you are consistent. For guidelines on MLA citations, review the following website, http://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/02/. Failure to cite your work will result in an automatic F (this is not negotiable).
Writing: If research is the work of history, then writing is the art. Writing in a clear and organized manner will assist the reader in understanding what you are saying and following your argument(s). Content is certainly important, but if the reader cannot understand what you are saying, then it does not matter how much research you put into this assignment.
This paper is not a copy and paste exercise. In other words, the majority of your essay ought to be paraphrased (written in your own words that is supported by credible sources). Direct quotes ought to be limited to supporting key points throughout your paper. Simply copying and pasting large blocks of text from your sources not only reduces your voice, but also gives off an impression of laziness.
Plagiarism: Without fail, every semester I come across a plagiarized paper. I cannot stress enough why you should not commit plagiarism. The first thing is that it is very easy to get caught. Even if you buy your essay from someone (and you shouldn’t), we have software that detects those types of fabricated products.
Grading: This paper is worth 100 points (it is 20.8% of this course’s grade). An A paper will meet the following requirements:
- The paper is written in a clear and organized matter. The reader is never confused about the writer’s main points, arguments and chronology of historical events.
- Part 2 clearly identifies a theme relevant to the selected city/disaster scenario.
- Part 2 is centered on a clear thesis statement. Throughout the entire paper, the writer reinforces their primary argument by continually referring to the academic and journalist sources.
- All of the assignment’s questions are answered in an accurate, clear and organized manner.
- All citations follow a proper MLA, APA, Chicago or Turabian style throughout the entire paper. The paper’s conclusion is followed by a bibliography, not a works cited section. There should be at least two citations per page.
- The paper is accompanied with page numbers and does not exceed 1,150 words. Please do not start the first page by putting your text halfway down the page or put in large headers/footers on each page. I have seen a number of tricks that increase page numbers and none of them work.
1 Note that you can select a different theme from the above list if you think there is another topic that is more suitable to your city/disaster scenario. The only requirement is that it must be related to the theme of sustainability.
