Alice Munro’s Runaway contains stories of women who act on a strong desire to escape their situations. Some characters flee and never look back, like Penelope in “Silence”, while others have second thoughts and return, like Carla in “Runaway”. Everyone has had the desire to run away at some point in their lives, whether it be from a problem or another person; however, many choose to stay, whether out of necessity or out of a sense of loyalty. We feel indebted to the people in our lives and don’t want to cause them suffering. For your first assignment of the semester, I would like you to write a personal narrative which explores your own experience with the desire to run away, addressing the following questions: When in your life have you wanted to run away from something or someone? What was the situation, and why did you have the desire to flee? What did you end up doing? Did you resist the urge, or did you leave? Why did you make the decision that you made? Looking back, was it the right decision? Like any narrative, your piece should tell a story, making use of sensory details and dialogue, with a focus on showing rather than telling.
