OMED 1380 Maternal and Child Health in a Global Context: Assignment Brief
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completon of this course you will be able to:
1: Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of a key issue in global child and / or maternal health
2: Evaluate policy and programming for mothers and/or children in a global context in relaton to a
key issue.
3: Analyse how gender inequality, poverty and inequality in general can impact on maternal and/or
child health.
4: Artculate an advanced knowledge of preventatve strategies and health promoton initatves in
the global context related to improving a key issue in child and/or maternal health.
Your assignment will be assessed in relaton to these learning outcomes above and the grade criteria
in the grading rubric (see the moodle site for the grading rubric).
So your summatve grade assessment for OMED 1380 is as follows:
Assignment 1: Report
Word Length: 2500 words plus or minus 10%
Outline Details: Producton of a report into an issue in maternal and/or child health in the global
context. Reports must cover historical, current and potental future developments.
Background
Think of me as the head of the World Health Organisaton and I have asked you to put together a
report on an issue in either maternal or child health in the global context. You need to research
and write this report.
So frst choose a topic:
This could be any of the following:
1) Exclusive breasteeding
2) Post natal care
3) Ante natal care
4) Peri natal care
5) Reproductve health
6) Maternal Mortality and Morbidity
7) Child Mortality and Morbidity
8) Maternal Nutriton
9) Maternal Health in general
10) Child Nutriton
11) Child Health in general
12) Gender based violence and maternal health
13) Early marriage and maternal health
14) FGC and maternal health
15) Maternal transmission of HIV/AIDS
16) Humanitarian situatons and maternal health
17) Humanitarian situatons and child health
If you are thinking of anything else let me know.
Then you need to think about a region of the world so you could pick a partcular country so
1) India
2) Nigeria
3) And so on
Or pick a region of the world
1) South East Asia
2) West Africa
3) Sub Saharan Africa
4) And so on
Or look at the issue more globally.
Once you have decided on your focus and your area you need to go and do a library search for
literature on the topic as well as search WHO and other organisatons for informaton. I am
expectng you to show an advanced knowledge which means you must show me that you are an
expert on the topic you have chosen. You must meet the learning outcomes.
So your report should have a ttle and be divided into sectons
Secton 1: Introducton – introduce issue and statstcs on issue. Prevalence and incidence – up to
date fgures and so on
Secton 2: What is the impact of the issue on mothers or child plus on society.
Secton 3: What causes the issue – link to inequality and poverty, gender and so on. Could look
politcally, historically and so on.
Secton 4: Evaluate policy and programming for the issue. Introduce global policy and evaluate it.
Secton 5: Focus on preventatve strategies and health promoton initatves in the global context on
the issue. What health promoton initatves have been introduced. Evaluate them.
Secton 6: Recommendatons for how to overcome the issue and conclusions

This is just a rough idea of how you could structure your report/case study – your topic may,
however, suit another way of sectoning/structuring it and that is up to you.
Your report should be submited through the turnitn link on the moodle site by the due date.

Assignment 2: Exam
Exam in April/May. This will be a take home exam and you will complete this at home and submit
by the due date. There will be 5 questons and you need to answer all of them and reference your
answers.
