1) Carry out a hypothesis test for the difference of the average flight departure delay between American Airlines and Alaska Airlines.
Display your statistical output BUT NOT the “stat advisor”.
Explain this result in a complete sentence.
For example, “because the p-value is (large/small), I (fail to reject/reject) the null hypothesis that American Airlines and Alaska Airlines have the same average departure delay. In everyday terms, this means ______________.”
Hint: In Statgraphics, Compare > Two Samples > Independent Samples. In the lower right corner, choose Data and Code Columns, and fill in the blanks for Data and Sample Code. Make sure Comparison of Means is checked. Only one of the output boxes includes the test result.
2) Explain why the test above is a test comparing independent (rather than matched) means. Note that this test is not a Test of Independence, as Test of Independence is for categorical data.
3) How would we calculate a test of matched means between American and Alaska? What would it mean for those flights to be “matched”?
4) Do you think both these tests are reasonable? Fair? Why or why not?
Deliverable: Upload your answers to (1) – (4) above.
