Technical Analysis as used by Stock Market Investors
Technical analysis is a means of examining and predicting price movements in the financial markets, by using historical price charts
and market statistics. It is based on the idea that if a trader can identify previous market patterns, they can form a fairly accurate
prediction of future price trajectories.
It is one of the two major schools of market analysis, the other being fundamental analysis. Whereas fundamental analysis focuses
on an asset’s ‘true value’, with the meaning of external factors and intrinsic value both considered, technical analysis is based purely
on the price charts of an asset. It is solely the identification of patterns on a chart that is used to predict future movements.
Technical analysis can be used on any security with historical trading data. This includes stocks, futures, commodities, fixed-income,
currencies, and other securities. In this tutorial, we’ll usually analyse stocks in our examples, but keep in mind that these concepts
can be applied to any type of security. In fact, technical analysis is far more prevalent in commodities and forex markets where
traders focus on short-term price movements.
Requirements: You are required to research the use of Technical Analysis when trading and or investing in “the markets”. In this
context this will include any public market which is used to trade any form of financial asset. “The markets” includes public markets
such as stock markets, debt markets, commodity markets, foreign exchange markets and derivative markets.
100 Marks
Research Report should have the following structure:
– Executive Summary
– Background/Introduction
– Theoretical Underpinnings
– Results of the use of Technical Analysis
– Discussion and Critical Evaluation
– Conclusion
– References
– Appendices
The “Theoretical Underpinnings” must include the basic theory that justifies the use of the use of technical analysis, and an
exploration of at least six (6) specific techniques used in technical analysis. For the purpose of this exercise “charting” is not to be
considered a technique, rather it is to be considered the output from the techniques discussed. That said the interpretation of the
resultant charts should be a matter for discussion in the report.
